Streetscapes
Hatton Gardens 2004 Kentish Town 2009 Inverness Street Market 2007
HATTON GARDENS Location: Holborn, London EC1 Client: London Borough of Camden The practice was initially commissioned to develop a streetscape and traffic management strategy for this historic area of Central London, requiring detailed analysis of the conservation area and the linkages between this quarter and other spaces within the locality. The site includes both the historic Jewellery Quarter and the Leather Lane Street market, one of the oldest and largest in the capital. The concept aimed to enhance pedestrian links between Farringdon station and the quarter, re-establish the dominance of Hatton Garden as the key route through the area, provide sensitive traffic calming elements to reduce rat running and define a series of pocket squares to punctuate the area and provide locations for street cafes and activity. The proposals also envisaged a new iconic canopy structure for part of the street market to replace an existing structure. The project required close consultation with residents, shopkeepers and market stall Holders. We were later commissioned to work with the engineers at the local authority to provide detailed designs for a series of traffic calming and environmental improvement works for the implementation.
