ARC LEISURE CENTRE Location: Matlock Client: Derbyshire County Council The ARC landmark leisure project in Matlock is a key part of the Central Corridor Regeneration Initiative within the Peak District. The scheme has transformed a former landfill site – known as ‘The Dimple’ – into nine hectares of landscaped grounds with a new-build sports centre as its focus. The facility includes a multi sport leisure centre including a 25m eight lane swimming pool 4 court sports hall as well as grass football pitches, mountain bike trails, external picnic areas and parking areas. The landscape design and siting of the building responds to the steeply sloping site and distant views across the valley. Ecological aspects were crucial with the integration of existing badger habitats and woodland planting as mitigation to allow the scheme to blend into its environment.
