GRAVES PARK SHEFFIELD Location: Graves Park, Sheffield Client: Sheffield City Council, KIDS charity Combining new equipment with natural play that makes use of existing woodland, the design provides a fitting play area for this popular park in the south of the city, carried out with Sheffield City Council. Funded by the KIDS charity for children with disabilities, we were asked to develop proposals for the refurbishment of a tired play area to provide a full inclusive children’s activity area adjacent to the Rose Garden Café in Graves Park. The park still retains the character of a landscaped country estate however the existing playground was functional and did not reflect the attractive woodland surroundings, or provide facilities for visitors to relax whilst supervising their children. Our solution includes the incorporation of the existing adjacent woodland and shrub belt, which provides an exciting and well-used opportunity for informal play. New fencing, seating, meadow grass areas and a path of discovery allow children, parents and carers to navigate and rest regardless of ability. Existing equipment has largely been retained and integrated with new inclusive playground equipment including a sand pit, grass mounding, basket swings and musical instruments. A direct route to the café allows better links, whilst additional tree planting creates shade, seasonal interest and colour.
