WEYMOUTH ESPLANADE - DESIGN CODES Location: Weymouth Client: Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Following the completion of our landscape character assessment and enhancement strategy commission, the team were asked to develop further detailed proposals based on the recommendations in the report for enhancing the Esplanade. These included the provision of new and improved beach facilities, public spaces and street improvements which were part of a drive to create a high quality resort with year-round attractions linked to the regeneration of the town centre. As part of the proposals the team developed a series of urban design codes setting out the justification and design principles for the location and form of new buildings and landscape structures. These would replace existing poor quality facilities, planters and uncoordinated street furniture that detract from the historic character of the town’s seafront. The document was used to bid successfully for funding from various agencies including English Heritage and SWRDA. We developed detailed proposals to planning stage for a new square around the George Statue removing the traffic gyratory around it and linking the monument with the pedestrianised high street. Dally Henderson also designed the first new building within the listed Esplanade for 30 years, completed on site in 2013 and providing housing and a new ground floor cafe / bar.
