WESTWAY LINK Location: North Kensington Client: Westway Development Trust / London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea The Westway Development Trust was formed in the 1970s to regenerate land around and underneath the A40 flyover in west London developing a series of innovative projects over the years, from a sports centre to arts events. They are now in the process of renewal aiming to generate greater benefits for the local community. Following the approval of the Spatial Strategy for the land under the Westway identifying key development opportunities, we worked with Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design to develop a public realm strategy which would form framework for the Trust and the local authority to use a as basis for a series environmental enhancements funded by section 106 monies and the CIL payments and other grant funding. The key aims of the strategy were; • to improve East-West movement for pedestrians and cycles linking to the proposed new link to White City, • deliver new sports facilities and improve the environment around the Sports Centre • create a series of public spaces and squares along the route including around Portobello Green and the market and Maxilla Walk. • to enhance the perception of legibility and safety.
